Board might review Port Angeles annexation despite withdrawal of appeals

PORT ANGELES — The reorganized Clallam County Boundary Review Board might review the city’s proposed western annexation even though all four appeals for such a review have been withdrawn.

The board agreed 4-1 Thursday to have the county prosecutor seek a state attorney general’s opinion on the issue.

Board member Tom Montgomery of Sequim, who is a real estate agent, asked the board to seek the legal opinion.

Board member Chris Koenig voted against seeking the opinion.

No future meeting was set to consider the opinion prior to a previously scheduled May 26 public hearing, which might become irrelevant.

The city is preparing to annex an area south of U.S. Highway 101, extending west of the city limit at Old Joe Road about 1.5 miles to the edge of the western urban growth area opposite Reddick Road.

The proposed annexation area, with an assessed valuation of $7.1 million, covers 346.41 acres and includes the Green Creek sawmill, Hermann Brothers sawmill, Lakeside Industries and the site of the proposed Port Angeles Hardwood sawmill.

Requests withdrawn

The boundary review board originally received requests to review the annexation from the Clallam County Public Utility District, Clallam County Fire District No. 2, Dry Creek Water Association and a group of property owners in the annexation area led by Mike Libera.

Public hearings on the requests were set for 6:30 p.m. May 26 and 7 p.m. June 9 in the family courtroom at Clallam County Juvenile and Family Services, 1912 W. 18th St.

Since those requests were filed, the board has received letters from the fire district, water association and property owners group asking those requests for review be withdrawn. Clallam PUD also will send a similar letter.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
