Auditions slated Tuesday in Port Angeles, Saturday in Sequim for ‘Cupcake Conspiracy’ with Readers Theatre Plus

Two evenings of auditions are coming up for “The Cupcake Conspiracy,” a Readers Theatre Plus scholarship benefit show slated for next month.

Tryouts will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Tuesday at the Mount Pleasant Grange Hall, 2432 Mount Pleasant Road just east of Port Angeles.

Another set of auditions will go from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Museum & Arts Center’s Dewitt Administration Center, 544 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

For this production, director Janice Parks is looking for two lead male actors and two lead females ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, plus supporting players who can be men or women.

The roles include Max, a nervous air traffic controller who sneaks out on a blind date behind his soon-to-be-ex-wife’s back; Natasha, a beautiful and sultry terrorist who has a thing about cupcakes; Alvin, a man of many identities; and Suzie, an assertive but insecure fund analyst married to Max.

Other parts in the play: a hot dog vendor, a bouncer, Ignatz the security guard, a narrator, two terrorists and Vince, a henchman.

In “The Cupcake Conspiracy,” by C.J. Ehrlich and Philip J. Kaplan, Max goes out with Natasha.

Atop the Empire State Building, he finds himself up to his neck in a terrorist plot involving her and some evil desserts.

He must foil Natasha’s plot, keep her henchmen at bay — and prevent his wife from finding out about it all.

“Cupcake” is Readers Theatre Plus’ first production following a hiatus that began in October as its former home, the Dungeness Schoolhouse, began raising funds to make the building more handicapped-accessible.

The effort to fund a vertical platform lift, or VPL, continues. For information about donating, phone the MAC, which operates the schoolhouse, at 360-683-8110.

Meantime, Readers Theatre Plus has found a new venue in the Mount Pleasant Grange.

The troupe plans to stage “The Cupcake Conspiracy” there on two weekends: March 20-22 and March 27-29, with performances at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Proceeds from the show will go into the Readers Theatre Plus Scholarship Fund, which makes annual awards to local students planning to study the arts in college.

The Mount Pleasant Grange is “gorgeous,” Readers Theatre Plus board member Paul Martin said, adding that it’s located 2½ miles up Mount Pleasant Road, south of U.S. Highway 101 just east of Port Angeles.

For more information, phone 360-797-7941 or send an email with “Cupcake Conspiracy” in the subject line to tnjparks@olypen.com.
