Pets, and sheep, at Port Angeles Community Market today

PORT ANGELES — Mimi Smith-Dvorak will have an animal parade, a dog-centric market and a sheepherding demonstration to kick off a special edition of the Port Angeles Community Market today.

“We are doing the sheepherding exhibition in the transit lanes,” said Smith-Dvorak.

It will begin at 11:30 a.m. today.

Sheepdog trainer Becky Northaven will be in the Clallam Transit bus lanes alongside the Gateway Pavilion at Front and Lincoln streets.

That bus block is between Railroad Avenue and Front Street, just west of the Gateway’s clock tower.

But on Sundays, no buses are running, so the community market is.

“We will have sheepdogs,” Smith-Dvorak said, “and a couple of sheep,” also running around.

“This weekend is our first Pet Day,” she added.

“I have some pet-specific vendors,” such as the Tiny Bubbles pet shop, plus a few pet-oriented organizations such as Peninsula Friends of the Animals and a local group that trains dogs to catch Frisbees.

The pet parade will start at 1 p.m., “so bring your dogs down,” she said.

“Where else can you walk your dog in a parade?”

At the Sunday community market, Smith-Dvorak welcomes vendors of just about anything, from art to fish to firewood.

The only wares not permitted are used items, alcohol, fireworks and firearms.

First-time vendors pay nothing. After that it’s a $10 flat fee per week to set up at the market, which runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each Sunday into October.

Business people who want to join the scene to promote special offers — or just the fact that they’re still here — can set up for free.
