LETTER:Landlords or tenants?

I read with interest Port Angeles City Council member Navarra Carr saying she would fight to “bring a voice for young people and renters.”

On April 27, based upon the recent injustices to landlords across the country during the pandemic, I asked in this forum if it came down to similar circumstances “who would get her voice on the council: the landlords or the tenants?”

She didn’t answer.

Maybe I should have worded it differently?

What I’m really looking for is a commitment to fairness and justice and how you will lead us, especially during times of competing interests.

There is still time if she would like to answer.

If not, she has two challengers who have filed to oust her: Mark Karjalainen and Nicholas Merrigan.

Perhaps they would like to opine on this and other important issues.

In fact, Amy Miller, who was appointed to Position 2, is running for Position 5 and is being challenged by Jim Haguewood and Deputy Mayor Brenden Meyer is being challenged by Kalli Mar Jones.

I invite each of you to tell us what you’re about on this and so many other things.

It may be a good thing that the city has such an ambitious list of capital projects, but what good is investment in this community if, by policy, we fail to enforce simple vagrancy and our beautiful community is overrun with homeless scofflaws, vandalism and theft?

I feel like we’re at a crossroads and we need leadership.
