LETTER:Traffic backed up

Once again, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) failed to advise motorists of daytime work that would significantly impede traffic.

The latest incident occurred Thursday afternoon, June 29, between Discovery Bay and Sequim.

Without any advance notice — no roadside reader boards, etc. — WSDOT refreshed the westbound lane striping on Highway 101, and in doing so slowed westbound traffic to a crawl from the WorldMark Resort to Blyn.

I know; I was in this inexcusable mess that poked along for miles.

When I called WSDOT’s Olympic Region office to voice my concern, the person who answered the phone had no idea even that this work was scheduled and ongoing.

Not only does WSDOT get a failing grade for communication, it also gets bad marks for not scheduling this as nighttime work.

There’s really no excuse, given that sufficient portable high-intensity lighting can be mounted on a truck and powered by a generator or heavy duty inverter.

So, WSDOT, what’s your excuse this time for failing to communicate with the public?
