LETTER: Shocking column

Cal Thomas’ Jan. 23 column, America’s Expiration Date, was a shocker.

Thomas suggests Christian/conservative parents shouldn’t send their children to state-run schools because they might be exposed to a science-based explanation to the origin of our species.

What trumps science?

The Bible, obviously.

An old story tells of three monks debating how many teeth are in a horse’s mouth.

They ponder which book of the Bible would contain their answer until one monk suggests they simply walk over to their stable and see for themselves.

How do the other monks respond?

They beat him up for heresy; the Bible must have the answers to everything, no?

Cal Thomas believes America is losing the culture war because we’re not emphasizing the Bible’s importance in “indoctrinating” (his word, not mine) the next generation.

The Bible teaches many great things — kindness, tolerance, patience, fortitude — but these lessons can be learned around a campfire without the scientific method.

The Bible provides critical lessons about living, not astrophysics.

Thomas is right — America is in a culture war, but it’s not a war against undermining one’s faith and values.

It’s a war against the willful denial of facts, facts derived from rigorous scientific discovery.

As a creationist, Cal Thomas proposes we ignore the horse in the stable because the Bible knows more about its teeth than basic observation.

Why is someone with such backward beliefs being given any ink at all in the Peninsula Daily News?
