LETTER: Improve boat launch

I’ve heard people reference Port Angeles as simply an old mill town.

I’m quick to correct them and point out all the beauty and recreation that surrounds us.

This is why I was disappointed to hear that the city is contemplating shutting down the Ediz Hook boat launch.

The area already looks abandoned.

When launching a boat, you better make sure it’s high tide or your trailer will drop off into the abyss of the harbor.

The parking lots here and at the city pier are run down and in disrepair.

What should be among the crown jewels of the city, a place that residents, fishermen and tourists frequent, looks like someplace you would find in a third world country.

A place like this should be clean and maintained, key to making wonderful memories and impressions.

We all know funding is usually the issue.

The city seems to be able to find funding for bridges, roadway improvements, a pool and even a new theater.

Why not these areas?

Do we need to think outside the box?

Don’t we have people who secure grants for these types of projects?

Has this been roundtabled with our partners in the state, port, county and Coast Guard?

Have we contacted the folks in Sequim to see how they are able to maintain and run their beautiful facility?

Lets keep them open and make some improvements. It’s a worthwhile investment.
