As is clear from President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Speech, the Republicans intend to make abortion a central issue, necessarily so because the Trump presidency has been an unprecedented disaster for the party.
They will have to re-excite their base yet again on their one core issue.
Abortion is part of the GOP’s broader agenda of disempowerment for everyone, except the 1 percent.
While women’s reproductive rights may be the first victims on the GOP victim list, there are many other targets:
• Voters: On the nonexistent pretext of voter fraud, Republicans purge their states’ voter rolls.
• Minorities: Minority voters are denied their voting rights by gerrymandering and other voting impediments.
• Union workers: Unions are undermined by passing so-called “right to work” legislation, known as “right to work for less” by workers.
Unions protect jobs and they talk back to corporations.
• Immigrants: The GOP demonizes both legal and illegal immigrants, ignoring the fact that most Americans come from immigrant stock.
• People needing health care: That would be most people in this country.
• Government: The GOP undermines government at every turn in an attempt to allow corporations to go unrestrained.
They prefer corporatocracy to democracy.
• Public schools: Republicans do not value this country’s fine tradition of public education.
They benefit from an uneducated citizenry.
The abortion-based campaign to disempower women is part of a well-funded campaign to disempower almost everybody else as well.
Voters need to understand this.
