LETTER: Article looks to blame Trump for local budgets

I take exception to the March 28 Peninsula Daily News article “Budget putting funds in peril.”

It explains that if the president’s budget is adopted, certain local programs that help the poor and less fortunate will suffer greatly.

So the way it really works is that congressional committees define budgets. If requested grants are not sustained, it is through actions of Congress.

No president’s budget is ever enacted as it was initially presented — never.

Regardless, the Peninsula Daily News needs to define someone to blame if the grant request fails.

So, that is Trump, right?

Thank goodness the article has given us what we need: We have someone who should do but will not do what we want done but are unwilling to do ourselves.

It is convoluted, but the point is made.

According to the article, the Olympic Community Action Programs budget is unsustainable without federal grants.

Untrue: We could fund it locally.

Consider this: If we get a federal grant, it will be with borrowed money.

Our federal government is $20 trillion overspent — in debt.

It has no money to give away in grants.

So, should we fund OlyCAP locally?

If the funds are not available, Clallam County government could borrow it.

We can pay it back later and, failing that, extend the loan.

If we get in too deep, we can go bankrupt and never pay.

And if, by chance, you think this epistle of wisdom is not sincere and even a bit stupid, just go back a few lines and count the 13 zeros that define a borrowed $20 trillion.

That defines stupid pretty well.
