Having served as a volunteer at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, I was profoundly saddened to learn that the AmeriCorps program is on our president’s chopping block.
If this is what passes for Republican politics, keep it.
I witnessed first-hand the dedication and professionalism from the AmeriCorps contractors in meeting the mission of educating people about the health and future of the Salish Sea.
Highly educated, they maintain the display collections, teach classes for local schools and conduct lectures and field trips for the local community.
Moreover, they participate with research, assist the stranded animal program, perform necropsies and work with volunteers and docents.
The elimination of AmeriCorps would present a severe blow to the continuity of operations and impact the mission of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, our community’s crown jewel.
