Rhododendron Festival parade set for Saturday

The annual Rhody Festival, music performances and a plant sale highlight weekend events on the North Olympic Peninsula.

• The 90th Rhododendron Festival will continue with the Kiddie Parade at 4 today, the Hair and Beard Contest at 6 p.m., Bed Races at 6:30 p.m. and a community meal and gathering in the American Legion Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday will start with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Elks Lodge and a nine-hole golf scramble at 10 a.m. at Camas Prairie Park.

Registration for the Grand Parade will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the Jefferson Community Foundation’s Nonprofit Resource Center, 2409 Jefferson St. The parade will start in Uptown at 1 p.m. and conclude downtown about 3 p.m. with the Cake Picnic at Pope Marine Park.

Saturday’s activities will conclude with the Elks’ spaghetti feed from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Chautauqua’s “The Big Show” at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall.

Sunday morning, the Rhody Run 10-kilometer race will start at 9 a.m. and the 5K race will start at 9:15 a.m. Both will be at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The Rhody Scholarship 18-hole Best Ball golf tournament will tee off at 10 a.m. at Camas Prairie Park and the Port Townsend Chautauqua Makers Market will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pope Marine Park.

• The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “Concerti from the Court of Frederick the Great” at 6 tonight at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $20 to $30 per person. Youths 18 and younger will be admitted free.

The concert will feature Chicago-based harpsichordist David Schrader, Seattle-based baroque violinist Elizabeth Phelps, Los Angeles-based baroque violinist Courtney Kuroda, San Francisco-based baroque violist Christine Moran, Montreal-based baroque cellist Susie Napper and Jeffrey Cohan of Anacortes, the festival’s artistic director and baroque flutist.

The program explores music composed for Frederick the Great’s court in Potsdam, including a harpsichord concerto and a flute concerto both by CPE Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite in B Minor for flute and orchestra and a concerto by Frederick.

• The duo of Larry Murante and Nati Popova will perform for Concerts in the Woods at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The concert will be at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Coyle.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $20.

Murante is a singer-songwriter who performs both original music and cover tunes in an upbeat folk-rock style.

Popova, who grew up in Moscow, Russia, studied classical violin at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow and organ at Hochschule Luzern (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts) in Lucerne, Switzerland.

• The Peninsula Men’s Gospel Singers will perform for a benefit concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Ark, 577 W. Sequim Bay Road, Sequim.

Tickets are by $20 donation. All proceeds will be split between Obria Pacific NW, Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County and the Sequim Food Bank.

The Singers will be joined by violinist Amber Roskamp, trumpeter Nancy McPherson, drummer Kendall Melton, bassist James Simonson and by guest soprano and alto vocalists Sally Adams, Susan Roe, Anita Krietle, Lou Laisnez, Pam Carnahan, Bev Brown, Vicki Helwick, Becca Paul, Rachel Moon, Angela Simonsen and Debbie Rogers.

• Lisa Lanza will host the 15th concert to benefit Ugandan AIDS orphans at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Port Townsend, 1111 Franklin St.

A $20 donation, cash or check, is suggested for concertgoers 13 and older.

Lanza, a pianist, will be joined by Squeezebox Rebellion, the PT Saxophone Trio, violinist Marina Rosenquist, pianist Michael Carol, Choro Combo, sopranos Jeannie Oneppo and Lee-Alison Sibley, Tango 4 and All City Choir.

Port Townsend’s Grace Lutheran Church has been supporting relationships with orphans in Uganda since 2002.

• Karen Sixkiller will discuss her solo art exhibit, “Cancer Sticks: The Corruption of Sacred Tobacco,” during an artist talk at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sixkiller’s presentation will be at the Port Angeles Main Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Following the presentation, there will be a special viewing of Sixkiller’s exhibit at the ʔaʔkʷustəŋáw̕txʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse on the college’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Her exhibit of bead, ceramic and sculpted metal art will remain on display at the Longhouse though June 17.

• The Port Angeles Symphony Chamber Orchestra will finish its season with two concerts this weekend.

The chamber orchestra will perform at 7 tonight at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave. in Port Angeles, and at 7 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. in Sequim.

Tickets are $20 per person at www.portangeles symphony.org and at the door.

Jonathan Pasternack will conduct the chamber orchestra and bassoonist Jacqueline Wilson will be the guest soloist.

Wilson, a member of the Yakama Nation, will perform “Concerto for Bassoon,” a new piece by Navajo composer Connor Chee.

The program also will include “Serenade for Strings” by Elgar, Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Bassoon in F major” RV 485 and Eller’s “Five Pieces for String Orchestra.”

• The Imagined Reality Improv troop will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

Members of Imagined Reality, including a scientist, two lawyers, a classical musician, a professor and a writer, create one-of-a-kind shows based on suggestions from the audience.

• The Anything Goes Spring Market and Plant Sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Crescent Grange, 50724 state Highway 112, Joyce.

The indoor/outdoor sale will feature crafts, antiques, collectibles and plants.

Food will be served in the kitchen, including biscuits and gravy, pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, egg salad sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, chili, tomato soup, coleslaw and pie by the slice.

• Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 430 will host a Flying Start information program at 10 a.m. Saturday in the passenger terminal conference room at William R. Fairchild International Airport, 1402 Fairchild Airport Road, Port Angeles.

The Flying Start program, which is dedicated to increasing participation in aviation, introduces people to the steps to learn to fly, the various requirements and provides tips on how to make it more affordable.

• Dennis Belcher will present “Before The Wood Spins” at 10 a.m. Saturday during a meeting of the Strait Turners woodturners club at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, Sequim.

Belcher’s presentation will provide an overview of maintaining a lathe, sharpening tools and safe drilling techniques.

Turners of all levels and those who wish to learn about the hobby are welcome.

• The Sons of Norway’s Olympic Lodge will conduct a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Farmers Market in the Gateway Transit Center, 122 E. Front St.

The sale will feature lefse, kringle, rosemaling design sugar cookies.

• The Clallam County Genealogical Society will elect new board members during a hybrid meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the society’s Resource Center, 403 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

The current board has advanced a slate of officers. Additional nominations will be accepted during the meeting.

Following the election, attendees will hear a presentation from Steve Hauff regarding the Spruce Division.

• The Digging Deeper gardening series will present “Growing Tomatoes Well Here” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

Master Gardeners Judy English, Laurel Moulton, David Rambin, Jeanette Stehr-Green and Audreen Williams will discuss what it takes to grow tomatoes on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Attendees will learn what tomato varieties grow best in this area, how to plant tomatoes to optimize available heat, how to care for tomato plants through the growing season, and the benefits and challenges of growing tomatoes in a greenhouse or hoop house.

The workshop also will include demonstrations and displays on planting and pruning tomato bushes, the use of season extenders and trellises and common tomato problems.

In addition to the class, other master gardeners will be on hand at the garden from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to answer other questions.

SilverKite Community Arts will present the online program, “Color Blending with Pastels,” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The free intergenerational program is sponsored by the North Olympic Library System.

Participants can use their own materials and follow along live on Zoom or later with a recording of the presentation.

The monthly series will conclude with “Sip and Paint Acrylics: Peonies” on June 7.

The class is appropriate for all ages.

• Nash Huber’s 84th birthday will be celebrated during a fundraising bash from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.

The fundraiser will assist Huber, the founder of Nash’s Organic Produce, with financial recovery from recent health challenges.

The celebration will include live music, food, a quilt raffle, silent auction and activities for kids.

• Nessa Goldman will host Out Loud Story Slam at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

The show will feature 10 storytellers from the audience who each will share a six-minute, true personal story on the theme, “Breaking the Rules.”

The stories, and their tellers, will be judged by the audience, and the winner will be invited to a future Grand Slam storytelling event.

• Susan Michaels will call for a community dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend.

Music will be provided by Breaking up Christmas featuring Dave Thielk on fiddle, Chris Cooper on banjo, Carol Hardy on guitar and Chris Stuart on bass.

All dances will be taught. Beginners and experienced dancers are welcome.

Admission is by $10 per person, $20 for a family.

• Paul Rogers of Port Townsend will be the featured performer at an accordion social from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim.

A recommended donation of $5 will defray room rental costs.
