Music, art and lectures offered on Peninsula

Activities are planned this weekend on the North Olympic Peninsula.

• Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra will offer a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chimacum High School, 91 West Valley Road. An open dress rehearsal will be held at 7 tonight in the high school auditorium.

• “The Origins of Maritime Sailing” will be presented by Gary Wessen at 7 tonight at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., Port Townsend.

Wessen, who has worked as an anthropological consultant for 50 years, will discuss some of the anthropological ideas about cultural adaptations to maritime environments, a summary of currently available evidence and what it suggests about the antiquity of maritime activity.

The venue is limited to 50 attendees, so pre-registration at www.jchsmuseum.org/programs-education is recommended.

• The Bunker, a free art studio for teenagers, will be hosted by artists Julie Read and Dana Sullivan from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Northwind Art School in Building 324 at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

The demonstration this time: pumpkin carving with pro tools of many kinds. Parent permission slips and information are found on the Courses page at NorthwindArt.org.

• “Weather or Not,” the celebration of plein air painting at Northwind Art’s Jeanette Best Gallery at 701 Water St. in Port Townsend is open through Sunday.

The venue is open noon to 5 p.m. throughout the weekend, with people’s choice voting underway until the show closes.

• Studio Bob at 118½ E. Front St. in Port Angeles has new gallery hours. It and The Loom next door are now open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

• Mia Torres will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

Uncle Bonsai will play Concerts in the Woods at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road in Coyle. Tickets are by donation only with a suggested donation of $20 per person.

• Carla Main and Friends will perform from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Vintage Wine Bar, 725 Water St., Port Townsend. No cover charge.

• Chicago Bob Longmire will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Spirits Bar at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Port Townsend Urban Sketchers will sketch in Laurel Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday. The group will meet inside the gate on Discovery Road between 22nd and 25th streets. The group will reconvene at the gate at noon to share their work and take a photo.

The event is free and open to sketchers of all skill levels.

• “I Know Nothing About Genealogy” will be presented by the Clallam County Genealogical Society at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the society’s research center, 403 E. Eighth St. The free class introduces the methods used and resources available to family detectives as well some common pitfalls to avoid.

Harvest Dinner will be hosted by the Esther Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

Meals are $25 per person and are available for takeout or dining in. Proceeds benefit local scholarships, the heart fund and the cancer fund.

The turkey dinner includes stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, roll, cranberry jello and choice of apple, pumpkin or pecan pie.
