Local artist hosts solo show at Sequim museum

SEQUIM — A solo show of the work of artist Susan Martin Spar, formerly with the Blue Whole Gallery and presently showing at Gallery 9 in Port Townsend, is on view at the Sequim Museum & Art Center.

The show will continue at the center, 175 W. Cedar St., through June 30.

A special demonstration of Spar painting a pastel landscape is set from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17. The painting will be for sale at a reduced price. Admission is free.

A representational artist who paints in a traditional classical style, Spar will feature works in both oil and pastel. Her subjects will include landscape, still life and a portrait or two.

Although primarily traditional in technique, Spar also enjoys plein air (painting on location). Some of these works will be on display as well.

Spar recently has been painting on gold leaf and says she finds the process both difficult and stunning.

“The results are quite beautiful. I especially like the way it works with both contemporary and traditional styles,” she said.

Three miniature works painted on gold leaf and framed in cathedral frames will be on display. A larger work, titled “Nesting Egrets,” which has a contemporary look, also will be for sale.

Spar’s work can be viewed at www.susanspar.com, and she can be reached at susanspar@susanspar.com or 360-477-1024.
