Live music, theater shows highlight weekend activities

The sounds of summer are set to fill the air as live music and theater productions hit Peninsula stages this weekend.

• The Summertime Singers will perform concerts at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $20, but the organizers state that no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Proceeds above expenses will benefit the church.

The program includes “The Heavens Are Telling” from Haydn’s Creation, Schubert’s “Mass in G,” D. 167, the “Four Pastorales” by Cecil Effinger, songs from Morten Lauridsen’s “Chansons des Roses,” and Shawn Kirchner’s arrangement of “Easy on the Earth.”

Soloist Nancy Reis will play the oboe part during the “Four Pastorales.”

• The Port Townsend Summer Band will present a free, family-friendly concert, “Wings in Motion,” at 1 p.m. Sunday outdoors at Chetzemoka Park, 1000 Jackson St., Port Townsend.

Concert-goers are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating on the grass at the park.

The program includes Hawk Moon; Dance the Night, from the 2023 movie “Barbie;” Feed the Birds, from “Mary Poppins;” Flying Away; Raptors: Birds of Prey; As the Robin to the Meadow; In This Beautiful Place; and On Wings of Glory.

The band will also perform Friday, Aug. 9, at the Jefferson County Fair and Sunday, Aug. 25, at Pope Marine Park.

• The Port Angeles Community Players production of “The Curate Shakespeare As You Like It” finishes with performances at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday and a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday on the main stage at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Tickets are $18 per per person, $9 for students at www.pacommunity players.org or at the box office 30 minutes before each performance.

The play, written by Don Nigro, is about a theater company’s struggles to bring Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” to the stage.

• “Jesus Christ Superstar” presented by Ghostlight Productions finishes its run with shows at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday and a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

Tickets are $14 to $20 per person and are available at www.ghostlightwa.org, by calling the box office at 360-207-0130 or at the door.

The 1970 rock opera, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of the final weeks of Jesus Christ’s life, as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

The cast and crew, all members of the local community, include Anna Pederson, director/choreographer; John Lorentzen, music director; Jeremy Pederson, as Jesus; Mark Lorentzen, as Judas; and Shahida Shahrir Mellon, as Mary Magdalene.

• Sway will perform at the Summer Concert series at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles.

Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at www.olympiccellars.com/summer-concert-series.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Clallam County.

• Poetry on the Salish Sea will present its second Summer Sunday Readings from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Wilderbee Farm and Meadery, 223 Cook Ave. Extension, Port Townsend.

This month’s readers include Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Rae Armantrout and Kay Ryan along with MacArthur Genius Award recipient Heather McHugh.

The readings are conducted outdoors, attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly and bring chairs or blankets for seating.

Small batch, handcrafted mead and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Other readings in the series are set for Aug. 25 and Sept. 29.

• George Radebaugh will perform from 5 to 7 tonight at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• The Key City Ramblers will perform from 5 to 8 tonight at the Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., Port Townsend. No cover charge.

• The New Iberians will perform for an all-ages social dance from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona Ave., Port Townsend. Admission by donation.

• Kevin Magner will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Spirits Bar and Grill at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Lauren Morgan will host a launch party for her new book, “Seasonal Herbalism: A Beginner’s Path to Medicine-Making and Dreaming with Mother Earth,” from 5 to 7 tonight at Dandelion Botanical Company, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim.

Morgan will read from the book, share stories and sign copies.

Art by Lauren Blair Churchill, the book’s illustrator, will also be available for sale.

• A “Barbie” watch party is set for 6 tonight in the temporary location of the Sequim Branch Library, 609 W. Washington St., Sequim.

Attendees can enjoy pizza, popcorn and beverages while they watch the free screening of the 2023 fantasy comedy.

• The Port Townsend Urban Sketchers will sketch at the Point Wilson Lighthouse at 10 a.m. Saturday; the group will meet in the parking lot by the lighthouse on Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way.

After sketching around the lighthouse, the group will reconvene in the parking lot at 12:15 p.m. to share their work and take a photo.

The event is free and open to sketchers of all skill levels, but a discovery pass is required to park on Fort Worden.

• Clallam County Master Gardeners Cece Fitton, Ed Adams and Loretta Ferguson will present “Gardening for Pollinators” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

The master gardener’s pollinator team will discuss how pollination happens, why it is important to the ecosystem and show different types of pollinator-friendly flowers.

They will also discuss pollinators on the Olympic Peninsula, with an emphasis on bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

In addition to the class, other master gardeners will be on hand from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to answer gardening questions.

• Teresa Schmid will present a free “Let’s Zumba” class at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Dance Center by Erica Edwards, 145 E. Washington St., Sequim.

Schmid, a certified Zumba instructor, will teach dance fitness moves to the rhythms of salsa, merengue, cumbia and other music genres.

Attendees should wear comfortable clothing, not jeans, and bring a small towel, water and wear shoes with a smooth sole that move easily on carpet.

• The Sequim Botanical Garden Society will conduct a Work to Learn party on the care of iris plants at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Terrace Garden at Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., Sequim.

Society members will demonstrate how to cut down spent stalks and foliage, how to dig up the rhizomes to detect rot and how to divide and replant irises.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

• A Composting workshop will be presented by the Washington State University’s Clallam County Extension at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Jim and Nikki Klahn Community Meeting Room at the Forks Branch Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., Forks.

Attendees will learn how to turn yard and kitchen waste into a rich soil amendment.

The free, three-hour workshop is oriented toward both beginners and those who already compost but are looking for more information.

• Jefferson County Master Gardeners will take the “Ask a Master Gardener” plant clinic and the seed library on the road from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday when the Bookmobile stops at the Quilcene Community Center, 294952 U.S. Highway 101, Quilcene.

Master gardeners will be available to answer questions on selecting the right plants for the environment, composting, insect infestations and unknown pathogens damaging plants.

Attendees may bring a sample of an afflicted plant or bring plant or insect specimens for identification.

The master gardeners will return to Quilcene with the Bookmobile on Aug. 24.

• The Uptown Arts District will host a launch party for a new mural by local artist Gianna Andrews from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Buena Luz Bakery, 1105 S. Eunice St., Port Angeles.

Attendees at the free party can admire the mural and purchase artwork from Andrews, enjoy live music by local musician Flora Madrigal and purchase food and drinks from the bakery.

The mural, the first work sponsored by the new arts district, was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

• An ice cream social and car show is set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.

Also on hand this month is the Smoke Trailer fire simulator.

The menu includes banana splits and sundaes for $7 each.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sequim Education Foundation.

• The inaugural All-County LGBTQ+ Potluck, hosted by gudlife, is set from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Wild Olympic Salmon Shelter at H.J. Carroll Park, 9884 Rhody Drive, Chimacum.

All members of LGBTQ+ community are welcome; attendees should bring food, drink, plates, utensils and good cheer.

The gudlife new bulletin was founded in 1999 by Ellen Bonjorno to share about local LGBTQ+ potlucks, get-togethers, events, services, support groups and projects.

It also shares select national and local news and personal announcements and inquiries.
