Great Strait Sale offers miles of flea markets

JOYCE — The Great Strait Sale will offer 61 miles of yard sales business specials, arts and crafts sales and fundraisers along the National Scenic Byway of state Highway 112 on Saturday.

The scenic byway runs from the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 at the east end to Neah Bay at the west end.

The annual event, first held in 2008, encompasses the areas of Joyce, Clallam Bay and Sekiu with sales at community members’ homes and neighborhoods along the route in true “flea market” style.

The Great Strait Sale is sponsored by the nonprofit Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway Association. It originated as an opportunity for those living on Highway 112 to participate as a whole in an activity that would draw people from all the neighboring communities and introduce visitors to what the Strait of Juan de Fuca businesses and landscape has to offer.

Joyce, Clallam Bay/Sekiu and Neah Bay each have a community site set up welcoming sales to join together flea market style at the site. Highway 112 residents are encouraged to hold sales at their own homes or in their neighborhoods along the route. Businesses advertise specials or discounts available the day of the event. And civic groups often join in with fundraisers.

Fliers are created each year with paid ads and a milepost map of advertised sales. The fliers are available in advance of the event at an announced location as well as on the website at www.highway112.org. The community sites distribute fliers the day of the event.

A place to stop for lunch on the trip along the Scenic Byway is the Crescent Grange on Highway 112 in Joyce. Or visitors can go the day before. The fall harvest market will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday.

The market features locally sourced produce, baked goods, crafts, knife sharpening, and other vendors inside and outside.

Food served in the kitchen includes pie by the slice, biscuits and gravy, egg salad sandwiches, clam chowder, chili and baked potatoes.
