PORT ANGELES — Correct spellings of “c-o-u-n-c-i-l” and “i-n-s-t-e-a-d” won the All-City Spelling Bee last week when 47 students from public and private schools in Port Angeles competed at the Vern Burton Community Center.

Students from Port Angeles School District elementary and middle schools — Franklin, Jefferson, Dry Creek, Hamilton and Roosevelt elementary schools, and Stevens Middle School — and Queen of Angels and Olympic Christian schools participated in the citywide bee May 21.

This year, the annual bee — which is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Jet Set and the Friends of the North Olympic Library System — was expanded to include seventh- and eighth-grade students.

The elementary-level competition continued as in the past with fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students.

Winners

Mary Shore, Hamilton Elementary fifth-grade student, placed first in the elementary-level bee by spelling the word “council” correctly.

Jordan Nicolas, Roosevelt Elementary sixth-grade student, placed second; Emily Bundy, a sixth grade Queen of Angels student, was third.

At the middle level, Lexie Peabody, eighth-grade student at Stevens, tied with seventh-grader Marian Amaranto of Queen of Angels.

Both spelled the word “instead” correctly, and the contest between the two was declared a tie because of time.

Third place was awarded to Stevens seventh-grader Kiara Amundson.

Each of the top three winners in both divisions received a trophy and a bookbag filled with prizes donated by the Friends of the North Olympic Library System.

All finalists had won the “spell downs” in their respective class bees to advance to the annual all-city bee.
