NEWS BRIEFS — Ediz Hook base accepting flags Thursday to fly for Veterans Day . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — When the regional Veterans Day ceremony is celebrated at the Port Angeles Coast Guard Station on Tuesday, veterans groups will fly their own organizational flags.
Those flags must be delivered to the gate of the Coast Guard base on Ediz Hook between 8 a.m. and noon Thursday, said Tammy Sullenger, county veterans coordinator, on Tuesday.
Air Station/Sector Field Office Port Angeles will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony, sponsored by the Clallam County Veterans Association, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The public is welcome to attend and can enter the facility from the front gate at 1 Ediz Hook starting at 9 a.m.
All guests are required to present valid photo identification.
The Coast Guard station has been designated a regional Veterans Day observance site for the 18th consecutive year by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
This year, the unit has also been designated a Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemorative Partner.

Caregivers event slated this Saturday
PORT ANGELES — The eighth annual Building Your Caregiver’s Toolbox Conference, “Keeping a Healthy Balance,” will be held at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The public is welcome.
The free event, co-sponsored by the Olympic Area Agency on Aging and the Port Angeles Senior Center, is for family and professional caregivers of community elders.
At the conference, keynote speaker Marty Richards will present “Keeping a Balance: Health, Hope and Heart.”
Morning presentations will include Jim Couture presenting “Maximizing Music in the Home,” as well as “Healthy Balance: A Taste of Classes” offered at the Port Angeles Senior Center.
The event also will feature more than two dozen agencies, organizations and businesses who will be available to offer community members support and information about local services.
Complimentary lunches for caregivers are provided by Park View Villas.

UFO meeting set
PORT TOWNSEND — An Olympic UFO meetup will be held at the Quaker Meeting House, 1841 Sheridan Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
All are welcome to attend the free event.
The group will focus on ETs; e.g., are they extra-terrestrials, inter-dimensional or crypto-terrestrial (species of intelligent non-humans indigenous to the planet Earth)?

Director to speak
PORT ANGELES — Annie St. John, director of television and film content for Booktrope Publishing of Seattle, will appear at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
In the Raymond Carver Room, St. John will discuss her work in the publishing industry and answer audience questions.
St. John has worked for Booktrope in several capacities since landing in the Pacific Northwest, including leadership roles in publishing, marketing and Booktrope’s middle-grade and children’s books.

Plant, garden swap
PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Garden/Plant Swap will be held at Fairview Bible Church, 385 O’Brien Road, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Admission is free.
There are no sales, just exchanges and freebies.
Traders will exchange expert gardening information as well as plant materials.
Attendees without plants to swap can bring cookies or chocolate.
