VICTORIA — Boris the dog gets to travel the world a lot more than the average canine.

That’s because his owner, Annaliese Vredeveldt, brings him along whenever she has to fly for work, which is easier than it sounds:

Boris is a stuffed toy.

But Boris’ most recent trip to Victoria was a bit more adventurous than either of them might have expected.

Vredeveldt said after returning from her most recent business trip to British Columbia, it was her, not her dog, who was left petrified when she realized Boris had not made it into her suitcase for the return trip home to Holland.

“I had him on the bed, and the housekeeping came in and must have changed the sheets and accidentally took the dog,” she told the Canadian Broadcasting System.

Little did she know, but while Vredeveldt was looking for Boris, he was getting a first-hand view of Canadian hospitality.

Vredeveldt was staying at the Fairmont Empress Hotel at the time and said that after phoning the housekeeping team to no avail, she was resigned to the fact that she would never see her plush traveling companion again.

That all changed two weeks later when a package arrived at her door in the Netherlands containing Boris and a few other bonuses.

“I was even more surprised when I opened an envelope that was in there as well — and a whole bunch of photos just fell out,” she said.

It turned out that the staff at the Empress who found Boris took him on an adventure throughout the hotel, adjacent convention center and parts of Inner Harbour, snapping photos with him as they went.

Vredeveldt, who said she appreciates the gesture and getting her toy dog back, said Boris is still recovering from his adventure.
