NEWS BRIEFS: Port Angeles grad on dean’s list . . . and other items

PORTLAND, Ore. — Courtney Lemon, a 2012 Port Angeles High School graduate, recently was named to the University of Portland’s dean’s list for the 2015 fall semester.

Students must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average to be recognized.

Lemon carries a 4.0 GPA.

She is a senior accounting major.

PA senior meals set for this week

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior & Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Green salad, pork loin, scalloped potatoes, Harvard beets and fruit cobbler.

■ Wednesday: Green salad, beef and veggie stir-fry, steamed rice and ambrosia.

■ Thursday: Fruit cup, egg and sausage bake, hash browns and baked custard.

■ Friday: Potato salad, cheeseburger with fixings and fruit cup.

Chain gang busy

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang removed 1,540 pounds of refuse during the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 5 on Black Diamond, Little River, Olympic Hot Springs, O’Brien and Deer Park roads, totaling 23 miles.

Trash was removed from one dump site on Little River Road and two smaller dump sites on Deer Park Road. A freezer, a small engine, a wood stove and two TVs were found.

About 1,300 pounds of refuse was removed from illegal dump sites on Mount Pleasant and Dietz roads, plus Orchard Lane. Crews brushed and chipped the county right of way on the following roads: East Beech, Everett and Miller roads, plus Shadow Lane.

The chain gang cleaned culverts on the following roads: Whiskey Creek, Gossett, Schmitt, McGarvie, Graul-Ramapo, Liljedahl, Wasankari, Elwha River, Monroe and Harrington roads, totaling 133 culverts.

During the week of Feb. 8-12, the chain gang removed a total of 3,760 pounds of trash from five illegal dump sites on Mount Pleasant (1,420 pounds), Old Rainier Access (1,720 pounds) and Quileute Airport (620 pounds) roads.

Approximately 50 hypodermic needles, 44 truck tires, a pickup truck bed liner and a stripped Yamaha street motorcycle were found along the roadways. In addition, crews built/installed shelving storage for evidence near the chain gang office.

The crew removed the “dog run” fencing and poles at Olympic Peninsula Humane Society on the U.S. Highway 101. Crews cleaned 138 culverts on the following roads: Pioneer, Mount Pleasant, Little Loop, Marsden, Henry Boyd, Glass, Dietz and Robinson roads.

The crew chipped storm debris on the following roads: Place, Little River, Black Diamond, Deer Park, Township Line, Obrien, Robinson and Gasman roads. Ditch lines were cleared along Harrington Road to Uphill Drive. Crews cleared the ditch line at Baker Farm and Monroe roads. Maintenance was done on the Discovery Adventure Trail from Eden Valley to state Highway 112, totaling 8.2 miles. Two hazardous trees were removed at the 4000 block of Deer Park Road. Crews performed culvert maintenance at the 2200 block of Edgewood Drive. Caution cones were placed at the end of Gossett Road.
