BUSINESS BRIEFS: Clallam Public Defender director honored for work on bail task force . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Public Defender Director Harry Gasnick recently received a certificate of appreciation of Distinguished Service from the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

The award was for Gasnick’s work with the association’s bail task force.

Clallam Public Defender is marking its 40th year of providing public defense services to Clallam County.

Gold certification

SEQUIM — The city of Sequim has received notification that the U.S. Green Building Council completed the application review of the Sequim Civic Center for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and has awarded the building agold certification.

The city worked with Lydig Construction and Integrus Architecture to incorporate “green” features into the building.

“We are proud to have built a facility that meets these high standards,” said Mayor Dennis Smith.

Interfor scholarship

PORT ANGELES — The Interfor Corp. has awarded Amanda Bennett of Port Angeles with the Dal Shemko Memorial Scholarship of $2,000.

Bennett plans to attend Western Washington University to pursue a career in journalism.

Interfor is a growth-oriented lumber company with operations in Canada and the United States. It has a division in Port Angeles.

KONP talk guests

PORT ANGELES — Here is this week’s schedule for the 1:05 p.m. to 2 p.m. local talk show segment on KONP radio, at 1450 AM, 101.7 FM and www.konp.com on the Internet outside the Port Angeles area.

Second segment: Tina Smith-O’Hara and Lisa Lyon of the Port Angeles School District discuss two upcoming events: the Stuff the Bus Event, collecting school supplies for needy kids, and the Back to School Event, which is where school supplies and free haircuts will be available to families in need, vaccinations available (not free to all) and SmileMobile staff on-site for September appointments.

Third segment: Matthew Rainwater and Debbie Spinks discuss an idea called “Pennies for Quarters,” a project to help homeless veterans in the area with housing.
