An accordion social and a downtown cleanup are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Clean Sweep

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Downtown Association will host its 23rd annual Downtown Clean Sweep from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers will meet at the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain on First and Laurel streets between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to receive job assignments.

They will weed, sweep and pick up litter throughout the public areas of downtown.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring brooms, shovels and gloves.

Shredding documents

PORT ANGELES — Sensitive papers can be shredded at the Port Angeles Food Bank from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The cost is $10 for every three boxes at the food bank at 402 S. Valley St.

The shredding is in partnership with First Federal.

Tree giveaway

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Timber Action Committee will host a free tree giveaway featuring Douglas firs and cedars from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Noble firs also will be for sale to benefit the group’s scholarship program.

The giveaway will be held in the Green Crow parking lot, Eighth and Francis streets.

Basement sale

PORT ANGELES — St. Matthew Lutheran Church will host a basement sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Funds raised at the sale at 132 E. 13th St. will help support the church’s preschool, which opens in September.

The sale also will support the weekly Community Wednesday Night Dinners.

Beekeeper program

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Peninsula Beekeepers’ Association will host an apprentice beekeeper certification program from noon to 12:50 p.m. Sunday.

The fee is $20 for the program at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The apprentice beekeeper is the first level of certification in the Washington State Master Beekeeper Certification Program.

This year, the Washington State Beekeepers Association is offering an online certification test pilot program.

The association will continue to present the course materials at the general membership meeting.

JOYCE

Lions Club breakfast

JOYCE — The Crescent Bay Lions Club will offer its last all-you-can-eat breakfast of the season Sunday.

The breakfast will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the club on state Highway 112 at Holly Hill Road.

The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.

The menu includes eggs cooked to order, hot cakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and ham, sausage or bacon.

Proceeds help Crescent Bay Lions members support Crescent school yearbooks, scholarships for Crescent High School seniors, holiday food baskets, glasses for the needy and other community projects.

The club will resume its weekly breakfasts Sept. 18.

FORKS

White Cane auction

FORKS — Forks Lions Club members will serve as bartenders and auctioneers for a White Cane Days Live Auction at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The auction will take place at Blakeslee’s Bar & Grill, 1222 S. Forks Ave., and will continue until everything is sold.

Among the selection at the auction will be baked and homemade desserts and food, sporting goods, services and one-of-a-kind items.

All proceeds, including bartender tips, will go to Lions Club sight projects.

DSHS mobile unit

SEQUIM — The Department of Social and Health Services mobile unit will be in Sequim from 8:30 a.m. to noon today.

The mobile unit will set up at the Sequim Food Bank at 144 W. Alder St.

Attendees can apply for cash assistance, basic food assistance and medical assistance; drop off paperwork; complete an eligibility review; get a mid-certification review; or make changes to an existing case at each location.

Great decisions

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Discussions Group will discuss the future of Kurdistan from 10 a.m. to noon today.

The free discussion will be at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

According to a news release: “Kurdistan — a mountainous region made up of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria — is home to one of the largest ethnic groups in west Asia, the Kurds.

“Many in the West know only the small, oil-rich autonomous region in northern Iraq called Iraqi Kurdistan, one of the United States’ closest allies in the Middle East and a bulwark against the expansion of the Islamic State group.”

New members are welcome.

Bird song class

SEQUIM — “Spring Sounds,” the eighth session of Backyard Birding, will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Dungeness River Audubon Center.

Olympic Peninsula Audubon leaders Ken Wiersema and Dow Lambert will present a slide, video and sound program about recognizing birds by their songs and calls at the center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

A $5 fee will be charged for attendees older than 18.

Thrift shop open

SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Remaining pieces of vintage Hall pottery will be featured at the shop, 204 W. Bell St.

Also in stock are prom dresses, summer clothing, accessories, jewelry, handbags, furniture, kitchenware, books and CDs.

All white-tagged items will be marked for sale at half-price.

Volunteers and consignors are needed.

The guild donates proceeds to health care providers and first responders.

School plant sale

SEQUIM — Sequim High School agricultural classes will continue their annual spring plant sale today and Saturday.

Hours for the sale at the greenhouses at the high school at 601 N. Sequim Ave. are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The sale began Wednesday.

Among the offerings are flowering starts, hanging baskets and vegetable starts.

Accordion social

SEQUIM — The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., will host an accordion players and enthusiasts social from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Lyle Schaefer will be the featured player.

The event is open to the public. Admission is a suggested donation of $2 per person.

Donations will help pay for the room rental, refreshments and mailing costs.

Supplemental donations for the featured players also are welcome.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Club will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Bingo is played at the lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks offer popular bingo games, including progressive.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

Film screening

PORT TOWNSEND — The film “Making a Killing: Guns, Greed and the NRA” will be screened at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The guest speaker will be Sandy Zee Aponte, who lost her son to gun violence and is in this film.

The film and address will be in the fellowship hall at 2333 San Juan Ave.

The film features personal stories from people across the country who have been affected by gun violence, including survivors and victims families.

Child care will be provided.

The event is sponsored by the Social Justice Council of Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Fantasias in Fiber

PORT TOWNSEND — An opening reception for a show of the artwork of Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry and Larkin Van Horn is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The artists’ work will be on display at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

An art talk is scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Exhibit hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.

Fallert-Gentry’s honors for fiber creations include a silver star from 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century and selection as one of the 30 most influential quiltmakers in the world.

Van Horn’s work is mixed-media 3-D structures and wearable art.

Free swim Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer free access Sunday.

The afternoon swim is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

Adult swim is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for laps, water walking and exercise.

All ages are welcome from 2:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. for open recreational swim.

An adult must accompany any child in the water.

Noodles and other float toys will be available.

PORT HADLOCK — A free First Friday Tour of the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is planned from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today.

The tour will be of the shops of the Port Hadlock Heritage Campus at the school at 42 N. Water St.
