Warning posted at Gibbs Lake after algal bloom

PORT TOWNSEND — An early season cyanobacterial algal bloom has been detected at Gibbs Lake, Jefferson County Public Health said.

The agency posted warning signs after the algal bloom was found on March 31.

The signs state that the water is unsafe for both people and pets, according to a news release.

Toxin testing

Cyanobacteria can produce Anatoxin-A, a neurotoxin that can cause sickness or death when ingested in even small amounts.

Anatoxin-A testing, through the King County Environmental Lab, was not available in March, but a test is planned for the week of April 6, Public Health said.

Toxin levels for lakes statewide are posted at www.nwtoxicalgae.org.

The department states that cyanobacteria blooms are unusual this early in the year and are more commonly seen in summer and early fall.
