Firefighters hold training day with Crescent School kids

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Fire District No. 4 firefighters recently visited Crescent School in Joyce for a training day with students.

The fire district brought its fire safety training trailer to show students how to safely evacuate a building that is on fire. Students also got to work with a firefighter by spraying a fire hose and learning about equipment that is used during a fire.

“We love getting out with the kids and showing them the basics about fire safety,” said Fire Chief Greg Waters in a statement. “In addition to teaching them things like stop, drop and roll; how and when to safely call 9-1-1; getting low and crawling to get out; and how to feel the doors for heat, we also want to expose the kids to what a firefighter looks like when they are all suited up in their bunker gear so as to not be afraid should they be faced with such a situation.

“A fully equipped firefighter with their mask and SCBA [Self Contained Breathing Apparatus] on can appear a little daunting. They kind of look and sound like Darth Vader coming through the smoke.”

Superintendent David Bingham said in a statement that he was appreciative of the fire district visiting with students at the school earlier this month.

“On behalf of the Crescent School District I want to thank you CCFD4/Joyce department for their role in providing valuable safety education to the students of the Crescent School District,” Bingham said in a statement.
