FORKS — Clallam Transit workers look on as Randy McAvoy, in excavator, and Moe Flores start excavation Tuesday at the Forks Transit Center in preparation for the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument planned at the site.

The spot excavated will be filled with concrete to create a footing for the granite base that will hold the 15,000-pound monument.

The monument is due to be delivered sometime in September.

The memorial committee has nearly completed fundraising for the nearly $90,000 needed to bring the monument to Forks.

A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 12.
