Port Angeles: Council approves 19.6 percent electricity rate hike

The Port Angeles City Council approved an average 19.6 percent electricity rate increase Tuesday night.

The vote was 5-1 with Cathleen McKeown voting no. Councilwoman Lauren Erickson was absent.

The energy charge portion of residents” electricity bills will increase from 3.85 cents per kilowatt-hour to 4.75 cents per kilowatt-hour. The monthly basic charge will remain at $11.

A Port Angeles resident using 1,500 kilowatt-hours a month will see his electric bill rise from $68.75 a month to $82.25, or about 19.6 percent.

A residential customer using 500 kilowatt-hours a month, who now pays $30.25, will pay $34.75, 14.87 percent increase.

A 1,000 kilowatt-hour customer’s bill will;; increase from $49.50 to $58.80 monthly, an 18.18 percent increase.

The increases are because of wholesale rate boosts from the Bonneville Power Administration.
