Peninsula: Officials “disappointed” as sales tax measures trail

Published 12:01 am Wednesday, September 18, 2002

Officials in Clallam and Jefferson counties expressed disappointment Tuesday night that voters were rejecting proposed sales tax increases for criminal justice funding.

They pledged to do the best they can with available revenue, though warning of impending cuts in important criminal justice services and programs.

The proposed 1/10 of 1 percent sales tax increase was labeled Proposition 1 on primary ballots in both counties.

In partial returns Tuesday night, the measure was losing 55 percent to 44 percent in Jefferson County, and 54 percent to 46 percent in Clallam County.

It would raise the sales tax rate from 8.2 to 8.3 percent in both counties.
