Clallam: County eyes cutting 18 jobs; another $600,000 cut coming

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Administrator Dan Engelbertson has recommended laying off 13 people and leaving five positions unfilled in non-criminal justice departments to balance the 2003 county budget.
The six criminal justice departments could face $600,000 in budget cuts later this week. No layoff recommendations have been made yet for those departments.
“Everyone gets to feel the pain,” said Commissioner Steve Tharinger, D-Sequim.
The 2002 county budget was $75.2 million, including a $23 million general fund or current expense fund. Then the county faced a $1.4 million budget deficit for 2003 which grew to $1.8 million, Engelbertson said.
