Jefferson: PUD challengers see mandate

PORT TOWNSEND — If campaign promises mean anything, the new Jefferson County Public Utility District No. 1 board of commissioners will focus on serving existing customers and accountability rather than expansion.

“Every smart business — and really the PUD is a smart business — tries to satisfy its existing customers before it gets too deep into new ventures,” said Dana Roberts, who ran a successful campaign on the slogan, “Water First.”

Roberts and David Sullivan, both first time candidates for elected office, ousted incumbents Dick Shipman and Ken McMillen for two of the three seats on the board.

Unofficial returns

In unofficial results, Roberts received 5,106 votes, or 59 percent, to Shipman’s 3,469 votes, or 40 percent, in the race for the District 1 seat.

David Sullivan received 4,621 votes, or 56 percent, to McMillen’s 3,531 votes, or 43 percent in the race for the District 2 seat.
