Port Angeles: Relay for Life to feature 46 fund-raising teams out to fight cancer

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Relay for Life organizers aim to raise $100,000 this weekend when more than 40 teams hit the track at Port Angeles High School to wipe out cancer.

From 6 p.m. today until 6 p.m. Saturday, participants will walk or run the track to raise money for cancer research through the American Cancer Society.

Teams will begin setting up tents around the track at 1 p.m.

At 5:45 p.m., cancer survivors — including Port Angeles City Manager Mike Quinn and Sequim Mayor Walt Schubert — will speak as part of the opening ceremonies.

Then survivors will walk the first lap of the track.

The relay, a nationwide event now in its 16th year in Clallam County, raised about $85,000 last year. Organizers hope to top that figure this year.

Already, 46 teams have registered, co-chair Tane Sipe said. Thirty-four teams participated last year.

“We definitely feel that $100,000 is reachable, and that’s quite a feat for a small county like Clallam,” said Janis Bane, media relations coordinator for the Clallam County relay.
