SEQUIM — A 19-year-old Sequim man died Monday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a stand of fir trees in the 3900 block of Happy Valley Road.

Michael Joseph Haley, a 2004 Sequim High School graduate, was ejected from the truck.

There was no indication he was wearing a seat belt, according to Clallam County Sheriff’s Department reports.

An autopsy was under way Monday night.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Haley was driving a Toyota pickup truck north on Happy Valley Road at speeds faster than 80 mph.

At a point where the road makes a 90-degree turn, the truck headed straight ahead, into the trees.

There were no marks on the road indicating that Haley tried to stop the vehicle or swerve to avoid a wreck.

There was no indication Monday night that drugs or alcohol were involved in the wreck, a sheriff’s investigator said.

Investigators had not determined the cause of the crash Monday night.
