Family members and friends of Melissa Carter will gather at 7 p.m. Friday for a candlelight vigil along the downtown Waterfront Trail in Port Angeles.

Carter, 15, disappeared from a party last Dec. 23. Her body was found Dec. 26 in a brushy hollow along the trail. She had been raped and strangled.

Robert Covarrubias remains in the Clallam County jail, charged with first-degree murder in the death. His trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 9.

Conviction would not carry the death penalty, according to Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly, because premeditation in the killing of Carter cannot be proven.
