CHIMACUM — Class 1A Chimacum High School opened the girls basketball season with a close victory over 2A Sequim on Monday night.

Freshman post Krysta Hathaway dominated the boards and scored a team-high 11 points as the Cowboys (1-0) edged the Wolves (0-1) 41-39 in nonleague action.

“Krysta was a power on the boards for us,” Chimacum coach Mike Clarke said.

Hathaway is a 5-foot-10 post.

Senior Samantha Benner canned 9 points for the Cowboys while freshman Cydney Nelson added 7.

Chimacum had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

“We had to make a change on defense,” first-year coach Clarke said.

The Cowboys led 11-4 at the end of the first quarter but led only 23-22 at halftime.

The Wolves outscored Chimacum 11-5 in the third quarter to take a 33-28 lead going into the fourth period.

The 1A Cowboys now host 2A North Mason tonight at 7 p.m. in another nonleague battle.
