ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ethan Melnick, Sequim basketball

Sequim has been getting big contributions all year from Solomon Sheppard and Jericho Julmist, but in the past month, the Wolves’ Ethan Melnick has been coming on strong down the stretch as a third offensive option.

Melnick scored 15 versus Kingston on Jan. 17 and 14 on Jan. 31 against Port Angeles, both big wins for the Wolves.

He saved his best game of the year for Friday, nailing five 3-pointers in the second half to score 25 points in a huge 77-47 win over perennial powerhouse North Kitsap

That victory gave the Wolves a chance to earn a share of the Olympic League championship Monday. The 11-2 Wolves played 12-1 Bremerton Monday night after press deadline. Whatever the outcome, it has been a special year for Melnick and his Sequim teammates, who will go to the district playoffs as one of the higher seeds.
