Billy Frank Jr. statue to be unveiled in Neah Bay

NEAH BAY — The Makah Cultural and Research Center will unveil the model statue of Billy Frank Jr. at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The model will be on display at the center’s Makah Museum, 1880 Bayview Ave., through March 6.

The full-scale model was created by sculptor Haiying Wu and will be cast in bronze to create a statue for installation at the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.

Frank, a Nisqually tribal leader and activist, fought to ensure the U.S. government would honor its treaty obligations to Washington tribes.

Frank was a special guest in 1999 during the Makah Tribe’s celebratory potlatch after it successfully exercised its treaty right to hunt whales.

The Makah Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days per week. Admission is $10 per person and $8 for students, seniors and active duty military personnel.
