WRESTLING: East Jefferson grapplers compete, bond at Cusick and Sequim summer camps

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Rivals wrestlers were busy this summer, attending a pair of camps to improve their grappling skills, bond with teammates and compete against opponents from different schools around the state.

In late June, 20 Jefferson County wrestlers from Chimacum and Port Townsend along with four Rivals coaches, traveled to Cusick to compete in the Bread and Butter Camp along with nearly 500 other prep wrestlers.

The Rivals competed as team in seven dual meets, posting a 4-3 record over the duration of the camp.

Camp came to a close with all 20 Rivals competing in a camp-wide takedown tournament.

Four East Jefferson grapplers advanced to the semifinals in their weight class: Mi Amada Ramirez, a girls wrestler who competed up in the boys 113-pound weight class during camp; Grady White (145); Manaseh Ramirez (152); and Silas Morford (152).

“It was a great week of team bonding, wrestling and having fun in Eastern Washington,” coach Ryan White said.

Learned from Mills

East Jefferson stayed closer to home for the Pin to Win Camp featuring former world champion Gene Mills and hosted by Sequim Wrestling.

“Our wrestlers had a great summer learning new techniques and developing better bonds through spending time with one another,” coach Jim Wilcox said. “I hope these kids stay active in the fall with other sports and activities and come back in the fall when we kick off our high school season with that same grit they showed this summer.”

High school wrestling and all other winter sports seasons will begin with the first practice on Nov. 13.
