Port Angeles’ Natalie Johnson shows off her first-place medal she won at the state folkstyle wrestling tournament held Sunday at the Tacoma Dome.

TACOMA — Port Angeles’ Natalie Johnson on Sunday won the championship in her division at the Washington State Wrestling Association Folkstyle Wrestling tournament held at the Tacoma Dome.

This is a tournament for youth private clubs, separate from the Mat Classic wrestling tourney.

Folkstyle wrestling puts more of an emphasis on controlling an opponent than freestyle wrestling and has different scoring.

Johnson competed in the 106-pound 9-12 grade division, winning with two pins and a major decision in three matches. She won her state championship the day after she finished eighth at the Mat Classic in the girls’ 100-pound division.

The Forks Wrestling Club also had kids at the event and several members placed.

Jade Blair in the grades 6-8 127-pound girls’ division finished third and Easton House in the U6 53-57 division came in third.
