ELITE SOCCER: Northern Peninsula Football Club fights to a draw in 105-degree heat

ARLINGTON — Playing in brutal 105-degree heat this weekend, the Northern Peninsula Football Club managed to keep Gala FC off the scoreboard in a 0-0 draw.
The Western Washington Premier League 2 soccer match was played Sunday on Field Turf in Arlington during one of the worst days of the heat wave.
“I don’t think anyone was able to put a coherent thought together let alone play decent soccer,” said team manager Joost Besijn.
The game had one-minute water breaks every 15 minutes. Besijn said the players mostly used those breaks to pour ice water on themselves.
With the draw, NPFC picked up a point and goes to 4-2-2 in league play. The next league game is July 18 at home against Nido Aguila, a team based out of Seattle. That game will be played at 2 p.m. at Memorial Field in Port Townsend.
NPFC remains in second place in the six-team WWPL 2 with 14 points. Seattle Umoja is leading the league with 19 points.
The WWPL 2 is the second-division league to the Western Washington Premier League, an elite amateur adult soccer league. This is the first year for the NPFC.
