PORT TOWNSEND — Students at the New Day Learning Academy of Port Townsend have raised $1,300 through Heifer International’s Read to Feed program.

The program provides livestock and training to families in need around the world.

Students’ efforts funded the purchase of a cow, two pigs, two sheep, two goats, bunnies and flocks of ducks and chicks, along with education and support for their care and production, according to a school press release.

The school raised an additional $120 through a student-led book sale which funded the purchase of a third goat.

The top readers were: pre-schoolers Paul and Daniel Hanke, 180 books; pre-schooler Dawson Ryan, 150 books; kindergartener Easton Benedict, 74 books; and the Pirolo family: third-grader Grace, kindergartener Rayna and pre-schooler Luka, 215 books.
