PORT ANGELES — The 2020 Pollanz Promise scholarships have been awarded to two students at Port Angeles High School.

Freshmen Ivy Honeycutt and Octavia Smith were each awarded the promise of a $32,000 college scholarship by the family of Gladys Christopher Pollanz.

To qualify for the scholarship, each must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average through high school and attend a four-year college.

The scholarships, which are usually awarded to eighth-graders at Stevens Middle School each spring, were delayed this year by the COVID-19 pandemic, which created difficulties in arranging interviews with candidates.

The other three finalists are Isaac Hustad, Katelyn Pressley and Karma Williams.

Each of them will be awarded $1,000 on graduating from high school with a 3.0 grade-point average and will be eligible to apply for a Pollanz Scholarship during their senior year.

Pollanz, a 1923 graduate of Roosevelt High School, bequeathed $1 million to establish the scholarship fund, which has awarded promise scholarships to middle school students since 2005.
