Clallam County Sheriff’s Office chain gang busy clearing roadways

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up 2,900 pounds of litter from five illegal dumpsites on Taylor Cut-off Road, 360 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Olsen Road and 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Deer Park Road during the week of April 8-12.

Notable items found include a truck canopy, two tires, a wheel, pieces of metal, two refrigerators, a washing machine, a water heater, two mufflers, a torque converter, a metal chair, five metal bed frames and three propane tanks.

Crew members assisted the road department by removing dangerous trees, and brushing and chipping on the Olympic Discovery Trail from Kaycee Way to the Elwha River bridge.

Crew members also cut, brushed and chipped on Heuhslein Road to Old Olympic Highway and on Old Olympic Highway towards Gasman Road.

During the week of April 15-19, crew members picked up 300 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Fish Hatchery Road and 3,200 pounds of litter from five illegal dumpsites on Taylor Cutoff Road.

Notable items found include a metal shelf, a metal chair, a plastic tote, chain link fencing, a seat from an automobile, carpet and plywood.

Crew members assisted by brushing and chipping on the Olympic Discovery Trail at Gasman Road.

Crew members assisted Jennifer Chenoweth by weeding and disposing of the weeds at the Deer Park Rest Area, the 3 Crabs Road berm and at the Carlsborg pump station.

During the week of April 22-26, crew members picked up 440 pounds of litter along three miles of Woods Road and 100 pounds of litter along four miles of Dan Kelly Road.

Notable items found along the roadways included five tires, seven needles, a truck transmission, a fiberglass shower, two road signs, three brake rotors, a microwave and a trailer.

Crew members picked up 100 pounds of litter from three illegal dumpsites on Deer Park Road, 400 pounds of litter from three illegal sites on Jimmy Come Lately Road and 4,280 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at a Mount Angeles pit.

Crew members washed, polished and painted CG-4 for Touch-a-Truck at Queen of Angels School.

Crew members assisted the road department by chipping and brushing trees along Melton Road, cleaning the ditch and culvert on Old Mill Road and by cutting back blackberries along Whiskey Creek Road and Mount Pleasant.

So far this year the chain gang has cleaned 74.5 miles of roadway, picked up 4,590 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 76,450 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter and pulled approximately 1,680 Scotch broom plants.
