Wally Davis headstone replaced

PORT ANGELES — Law enforcement, former law enforcement, volunteers and citizens have raised funds to put in a new headstone for Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis, who was killed in the line of duty in 2000.
Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said about $2,500 was raised and his deteriorating headstone at Ocean View Cemetery was replaced Monday.
That money also included funds from the Olympic Peninsula Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, which was set up after Davis’ death and funded his waterfront bench.
“It shows the community cares,” Benedict said. “I’m excited that it was done on fairly short notice and we were able to raise the money to do something very positive.”
Shortly after noon Aug. 5, 2000, Davis was ambushed and shot in Gales Addition east of Port Angeles while responding to a disturbance report.
Thousands attended his memorial and for a week the clock at the Clallam County Courthouse showed 1:36, the time Davis was pronounced dead.
Davis, who moved to Clallam County from Southern California, had been with the agency for five years and had been in law enforcement for 25 years.
