NEWS BRIEFS: Fire District 2 to discuss potential litigation today … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Fire District 2 commissioners will discuss potential litigation in executive session today.

Commissions are expected to take action after the closed session at 1:30 p.m. at 1212 E. First St., Port Angeles.

Honor roll

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University has released its list of students who made the scholastic honor roll for the winter term. Students must have a 3.5 or better grade-point average and must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work to make the listing.

Yoga benefit report

PORT TOWNSEND — The community yoga benefit program “Do Good, Feel Good” announced that it collected approximately $3,600 for area nonprofit organizations during 2017.

Each month a different nonprofit was selected to receive the funds gathered from the volunteer-lead classes at Madrona MindBody Institute at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way, Building 310.

“The idea is that people ‘feel good’ by doing yoga, and they ‘do good’ by donating to the various nonprofits,” said yoga teacher Kay Jensen.

Jensen based “Do Good, Feel Good” on a Bainbridge Island program which has raised more than $20,000 in the past six years, according to a news release.

In addition to Jensen, yoga teachers Tinker Cavallaro, Shayann Hoffer, Renee Klein, Aliina Lahti, Christine Schoper, Heather Sky, Karen Stillwell, Vanessa Wade, Terry Wagner and Debra Wolf volunteered.

The 2018 schedule has been set, with classes held monthly on the second Monday, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at Madrona. Classes are for all levels, including those who never have tried yoga before. Yoga mats and other props are provided.

Y open house

PORT TOWNSEND — The​ ​YMCA’s​ ​Building​ ​Futures​ ​Mentoring​ ​Program​ ​will hold a volunteer orientation-open house at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Potential​ ​volunteers​ ​are invited to the YMCA of Jefferson County, 1925 Blaine St., ​site​ ​to​ ​meet​ ​program​ ​staff​ ​and​ ​volunteers​ ​and​ ​to​ ​learn​ ​more​ ​about​ ​the​ ​program.

The ​school​-based​ ​mentoring​ ​program​ ​matches​ ​volunteer​ ​mentors​ ​with first- to ninth-grade students​ ​referred​ ​to​ ​the​ ​program.

About​ ​20​ ​students​ ​are​ ​waiting​ ​to​ ​be matched​ ​and​ ​a​ ​few​ ​more​ ​are​ ​needing​ ​to​ ​be​ ​re-matched, according to the release.

Orientation-open houses will be be held every third Thursday of the month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the next event slated for ​Feb.​ ​15​​ ​at​ ​the​ ​Chimacum​ ​Elementary​ ​Y, 91 West Valley Road.
