NEWS BRIEFS: Temporary maintenance closure set for Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center’s pool . . . and other items

SEQUIM — The main pool at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center (SARC) will be closed from April 26 to May 25 for paint work on the pool’s bottom.

The work, which needs to be completed every five to seven years, is performed to reinforce the integrity of the pool and for safety, according to a news release.

A shorter closure for other pool areas, including the shallow pool, hot tub, dry sauna and steam room, is set for May 6-25.

The rest of the facility will be open.

During the closure, SARC annual passes will be honored at the William Shore Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles.

Annual pass holders who wish to use the William Shore Pool during the closure should bring their SARC card or driver’s license.

Participants who only attend water classes a and are on a 30-day class pass will receive credit.

Meeting shifted

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Fire District No. 2 has rescheduled its monthly board meeting to Tuesday, April 14, at 508 N. Baker St. at 7:30 p.m.

It was previously scheduled for April 21.

Passport agent

SEQUIM — The city’s passport acceptance agent will be unavailable to take in passport applications from April 27-May 1 and from May 11-18.

Passport applications will be accepted at the Clallam County Auditor’s Office, 223 E. Fourth St., in Port Angeles.

Talk focuses on plants from cuttings

PORT ANGELES — Veteran Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardener Rosalie Preble will demonstrate how to propagate hardy shrubs such as heathers, fuchsias, hydrangeas and small rhododendrons from cuttings Thursday.

The program starts at noon in the county commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

In “New Plants from Cuttings,” Preble will explain how to determine what plants are most appropriate for cutting propagation and when to take cuttings.

She will demonstrate how to take cuttings and how to prepare them.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown-bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Attendees can bring a lunch.

The presentation is free and open to the public. Donations help offset costs for handouts.

PORT ANGELES — Single mothers attending Peninsula College during the 2014-15 academic year can apply for a $1,000 scholarship.

Yacht club training set this month

PORT LUDLOW — The annual training day for the Port Ludlow Yacht Club is Saturday at the Beach Club, 121 Marina View Drive.

This year’s theme is “Competence + Enhanced Technology = Safety + Peace of Mind.”

The program covers a wide range of topics and breakout sessions, including emergency medicine, a man overboard drill, boating APS, handling bad weather, tablets and electronics, and “The Boater’s Mind-set.”

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the first program begins at 9 a.m.

The cost is $10 for yacht club members and $15 for the general public.

The registration fee includes lunch.

Everyone is welcome to attend; however, registrations must be made in advance by emailing Anne Burrell-Smith at rearcom1@plyc.us.

Pioneer Dinner

SEQUIM — The annual Sequim Pioneer Dinner will be held at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 8.

Tickets are $17 and can be purchased through Hazel Ault at BrokersGroup realty, 360-681-8778.

To qualify for attendance, one must be a descendant of a pioneer family and have lived in the Sequim School District for 40 or more years.

President’s list

BISMARCK, N.D. — Erin Henninger of Sequim was named to the president’s list at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., for the fall 2014 term.

Henninger, 20, achieved a grade-point average of 4.0.

She is pursuing an undergraduate degree in psychology, with graduation set for December.
