PORT ANGELES — Whale evolution — how cetaceans evolved from a deer-like land animal millions of years ago — is the topic of a free lecture by biologist Dr. Jon Peters at The Landing mall Saturday evening.

The Juan de Fuca Freethinkers, a nonprofit group of local secularists, will host the 6:30 p.m. program in the upstairs conference room of The Landing, 115 E. Railroad Ave.

Peters will take questions during his hourlong talk.

Fossils, DNA

In a detailed look at the evidence for whale evolution, Peters will discuss fossils, modern whale anatomy and DNA analysis.

He has studied the work of hundreds of scientists who have conducted research over decades on how this group of mammals migrated from water to land and back into the water.

Peters holds a master’s degree in biology from Northern Arizona University and a degree in medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

He is a practicing pediatrician in Portland, Ore.
