Feiro lab to host lecture on Salish crabs

PORT ANGELES — Gregory Jensen will give a lecture, “Crabs of the Salish Sea,” at the Feiro Marine Life Center, 315 N. Lincoln St., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The cost is $7. Feiro members are admitted free.

The public is invited to learn about the life of the Dungeness crab and meet its less-famous relatives that also live in local waters.

Jensen is a crab-lover who does research and teaching at the University of Washington. A Northwest native, he will share what he’s learned in more than 40 years of diving and studying these animals.

He is the author of a new book, Pacific Coast Crabs and Shrimps, a guide to the shallow-water crustaceans of the Pacific coast.

Slugs 101 lecture

PORT ANGELES — Thurston County Master Gardener Program Coordinator Cori Carlton will present “Slugs 101: Friends or Foes?” at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Carlton will discuss the benefits of native slugs, why non-native slugs eat plants, the stories slime trails tell and more.

She has a Bachelor of Science in biology and recreation/park administration from Central Michigan University. She has spent the past 23 years studying and teaching about slugs.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Participants should bring a lunch.

Northwind Reading

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Reading Series will feature Denise Banker and Ed Skoog at the Waterman & Katz Building, 701 Water St., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Banker is the author of one collection of poetry, Swimming the Colorado.

She holds a doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she was awarded the Gaffney/Academy of American Poets Prize, the Louise VanSickle Award and a Dudley Bailey Fellowship.

She has taught high school English and drama and has spent most of her career as a professor of English at Concordia University, Neb. She lives in Port Townsend.

Skoog is the author of two books, Mister Skylight and Rough Day.

His poems have appeared in Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Narrative, Poetry, Poetry Northwest, The New Republic and Tin House.

He has been a visiting professor at George Washington University, Wichita State University, University of Montana and Tulane. He lives in Seattle with his wife and son.

Academic scholar

AMERICUS, Ga. — Julie Brandsma of Port Angeles recently made the summer 2014 Academic Achievement List at Georgia Southwestern State University and was among 390 students recognized for scholastic achievement.

To be eligible for the Academic Achievement List, a student must earn at least 12 credit hours at the university, be enrolled in three to 11 hours of courses and earn a 3.5 or higher grade-point average.
