WEEKEND: Quilcene runs to go through forest, farms, along sea Saturday

QUILCENE — A trio of runs will offer views of farms, forests and sea Saturday.

The Quilcene Oyster Half-Marathon, a 10K Salmon Run and a 5K Ranger Run all will start at 9 a.m. at Worthington Park, next door to the Quilcene Museum at 151 E. Columbia Ave.

All three races will finish at the same place, with each registered finisher getting a medal, T-shirt, special snacks and — for adults — a free beer from the beer garden.

The half marathon and 10K are certified and sanctioned by USA Track & Field.

The registration fee for the half-marathon is $65 today and $70 Saturday.

The 10K fee is $45 today and $55 Saturday for adults, $40 today and $45 Saturday for students 18 and younger.

The 5K fee is $30 today and $40 Saturday for adults, $25 today and $30 Saturday for students.

Runners can register online at www.quilcenehalfmarathon.com, in person from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today or beginning at 7 a.m. the day of the race at the Linger Longer Stage.

Ribbons will be awarded to the men and women who finish first, second and third in each race.

Medals also will be awarded in several age groups in the half-marathon.

Special children’s races

Children 9 and younger can compete in their own race.

The Jefferson Healthcare Kids’ Sprint will begin at 8 a.m. in a separate area.

Heats are planned for runners in age groups of 7 to 9, 4 to 6, and 3 and younger.

Registration is Saturday morning. Admission is free.

The oyster, salmon and ranger runs all wind through forests and farmland overlooking Quilcene Bay.

■ Quilcene Oyster Half-Marathon — This route, which is 13.09 miles, winds through the hills overlooking Hood Canal and Quilcene Bay. It crosses the Little Quilcene River and passes several farms before heading uphill through farms and woods,

A gravel road moves through forest to a ridge road with panoramic views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, winding back down to a nearly flat run around Quilcene Bay to the finish.

It begins at 9 a.m.

■ Quilcene Salmon 10K Run — Both walkers and runners are welcome on this 6.17-mile course through forest and farmland. It also features views of Quilcene Bay.

■ Ranger Run 5K — This 3.11-mile course along Quilcene Bay accommodates joggers and walkers.

Water stations, portable toilets and aid stations are planned along the courses.

Proceeds benefit Quilcene-Brinnon Dollars for Scholars and Count Me in for Quilcene. Both are nonprofit organizations.
