NEWS BRIEFS — Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center levy meetings slated this week, next . . . and other items

Published 12:01 am Friday, September 26, 2014

SEQUIM –– Supporters of a property tax levy for the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center will explain details of the measure today, Saturday and Tuesday.

The sessions will be in the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 11 a.m. to noon today, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The measure, which will be on the February special election ballot, would cost each property owner 12 cents per $1,000 valuation for six years.

The levy would generate about $416,000 each year.

The measure would require 60 percent approval by voters to pass.

Commissioners for the facility, known by the acronym SARC, voted in July to ask voters for funding for the first time since 2003.

The money would go toward replacement of aging equipment, according to Susan Sorensen, chairwoman of the Citizens for SARC committee.

A 12-cent levy would add about $26.04 to the annual property tax bill of the owner of a $217,000 house, the average value in the district.

Republicans meet

SEQUIM — Voters are invited to get to know Republican candidates Marty McClendon, Mark Nichols, Will Payne, Bill Peach and Republican-endorsed candidate Rick Porter during a meet-and-greet Saturday.

The event will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the basement of Blue Sky Realty, 190 Priest Road, Sequim.

Appointed Prosecuting Attorney Payne and former Chief Deputy Prosecutor Nichols, both Republicans, are vying for the county prosecuting attorney position.

Peach, a Forks resident, faces Port Angeles City Councilwoman Sissi Bruch, a Democrat, in the race to represent District 3, which covers the West End from west Port Angeles to the Pacific.

In a nonpartisan race, District Court 1 Judge Porter faces challenger Cathy Marshall, manager of the Port Angeles office of the state attorney general and president of the Clallam County Bar Association.
