Port Townsend bicyclist stable after collision with truck on state Highway 19

PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Townsend bicyclist was in stable condition in the Jefferson Healthcare emergency room late Thursday afternoon after a collision with a pickup truck on state Highway 19.

Nichole R. Sturdivant, 48, was bicycling southbound on the highway at about 1:25 p.m. when Patrick D. Waller, 58, of Port Hadlock, who was traveling north on the highway, attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Four Corners Road in front of Sturdivant, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.

The cyclist struck the side of Waller’s Chevrolet pickup truck and was thrown 20 feet into the middle of the intersection, said Bill Beezley, spokesman for East Jefferson Fire-Rescue.

Winger said Waller was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Sturdivant complained of shoulder pain and was transported to Jefferson Healthcare for treatment, said Beezley, who added that the bicycle was destroyed.

A hospital spokesman said at 3:20 p.m. that Sturdivant was in stable condition in the emergency room.

The cyclist was wearing bright-pink clothing and a helmet, Beezley said, adding that the bicycle was fitted with flashing lights.
