QUILCENE — The first person to declare candidacy for the District 3 Jefferson County commissioner’s seat to be vacated by John Austin also became the first to file candidacy papers Monday.

Kathleen Kler, 63, sent her papers from the Quilcene Post Office on Monday morning.

As of Monday, Kler was the only person to have announced an intention to run for the four-year term set to begin in January.

Kler has said she is running because the southern part of the county, Brinnon and Quilcene, have not been well represented in county government.

The district also includes Port Ludlow, Shine, Coyle, Gardiner and the western part of the county that extends to the Pacific Ocean.

Monday was the first day for candidate filing by mail with online and in-person filings starting May 12.

All filings must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. May 16.

If there are more than two candidates, they will compete in the Aug. 5 primary with the top two candidates advancing to the Nov. 4 election.
