Marine sanctuary meeting scheduled Friday

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary advisory council will be updated on a natural resource program at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center and hear about essential fish habitat proposals on Friday.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will be from 9:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in room 160 at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Public comment will be at 2:45 p.m.
The program at the skills center at 905 W. Ninth St., in Port Angeles offers classes to high school-aged students across the North Olympic Peninsula.
All classes include hands-on field work and offer high school and college credit for those interested in careers in natural resources.
The agenda also will include a status update from Pacific Fishery Management Council actions requesting Essential Fish Habitat proposals, an update on the sanctuary’s implementation of a 2011 Management Plan and a report on the sanctuary’s projected implementation 2014 priorities.
The sanctuary — which encompasses about 3,189 square miles off the Washington coast, extending from Cape Flattery to the Copalis River — is overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It’s office is in Port Angeles.
The advisory council, composed of 22 seats, provides advice and recommendations on managing and protecting the sanctuary.
